Cydia pomonella

That's codling moth (C. pomonella), the worm in the apple, and this is for those of you who have backyard electronic weather stations and are running a Linux-based PC in the kitchen. Take a look at the weeWX software suite (written by Tom Keffer) for managing that weather station and collecting back...

Re: Good enough to eat

Even though it is an old article, it is frustrating to see such nonsense being published in a serious newspaper. Monbiot is not just our moonbat; he's everybody's moonbat. He's such a great moonbat, we here in the States have heard of him, courtesy of the Canadian climate-skeptic blog of Steve McIn...

Re: Apple Variety

Hi, we are looking to get a single apple tree for our smallish garden - eating variety. We are looking for a self pollinator that requires little/no spraying. We have previously had an unidentified apple tree. The flesh was pinkish and quite fluffy - not keen on getting the same again. Maybe you ha...

Re: Versatile apple for the NW?

My husband is interested in cider making, I would like something to eat fresh, and we both want to be able to bake with them. Consider a multi-graft tree, or top-work your Yellow Transparent. Raising multiple varieties (even on one trunk) means that unrelated pollen will generally be available unle...

What is this?

http://lacusveris.com/Snaps/B9%20--%20Sheboygan,%20WI%202014-07-24%2012%3A00%20Thumb.jpg Please help me identify this whip. I have a pretty good notion that this is Budagovsky (the Bud 9 rootstock). It came up volunteer in my orchard where I had removed a flowering crab apple, and it seems identica...

Re: Trees refusing to branch...

Here're some notes from a series of lectures on "Fruit Tree Growing for the Backyard Gardener" by Tony Dembski at Brown County Extension Service (Green Bay, WI) in early spring 2011. Notching above a bud on the trunk in early May before bloom will stimulate vegetative growth. Notching was ...

Re: Enterprise apple, Wealthy

Anyone familiar with these apples in general, was looking to get scion wood possibly at the end of winter. They seem like very good all around apples. My zone is 5a-6b - western MD. I'm in 3b in eastern Wisconsin. I have twenty trees of various kinds. Wealthy is the most prolific bearer of all. ......

Re: New Prairie Spy Tree

Yep, I put some miracle grow on it, last year and a couple of times earlier this season. ... I intend to use dried organic manure unless you advise otherwise. Young trees can use the nitrogen (N) for vegetative growth. I'm told some varieties are prone to fruit splitting, though, when getting too m...

Re: New Prairie Spy Tree

Thanks for the thorough advice. I don't think the gashes or better described as splits, are from birds. Maybe it is like cherries. I think cherries split if they get too wet on the tree. Man, what a wet summer. Each apple has usually one large split about an inch or more much more in length, about ...

Re: New Prairie Spy Tree

Some apples have already fallen to the ground. I thought this was supposed to be late season apple. Is this normal? Most varieties are prone to summer drop, and it is prevalent in some. Young trees may set more fruit than can be brought to maturity. This is the trees' way of adjusting midseason. Al...

Re: Hello from Eastern Tennessee

Yes, us codgers should stick together. I was talking to an old dude the other day who is thinking about getting back into the business and rejuvenating an overgrown orchard. This is not a young guy's hobby. All the people I see in it are pushing 60. I'm not sure why, but it's always been that way. T...

Loosen Tie-Downs

I thought maybe last Sunday was silver-tip, but I looked again today. Hmm, I don't think so. There may be one tree that has just begun to bud out, but the season is early and cold yet, and any signs of Spring are in my imagination. All my dwarf apple trees on B9 and M26 are staked. This evening afte...

Re: Help Apple Tree (Macintosh Dwarf)

It's awfully close to the fence. Do you want to train it espalier ? Maybe the fence was put in after the tree was planted, eh? It doesn't have a lot of growth yet and probably is not very valuable. I think I'd euthanize it and start over unless you're invested in it emotionally. Things to do better ...
