Re: how soon will my apple tree produce fruit?
The Winesap variety is triploid, meaning you will need the pollen from two other varieties to pollinate it. Plus...the pollen from the Winesap is sterile so it will not pollinate any other varieties. As for insect and disease control, check online with land grant universities for info. Ohio State an...

Re: CANKER? w/ Pictures
It is a canker (what my grandfather called tree cancer). I'm not sure what damaged caused it (hail or cicada?) or which disease is infesting it (bot, nectria?), but I would recommend you trim it out wherever possible and destroy the removed limbs. This will spread to any other future open wounds on ...

For traps and other orchard supplies:
Oescoinc.com
or
Gemplers.com
If you have a pesticide applicators license other growers should be able to point you to an ag chemical dealer in your area.
If you do not have a license, I would also recommend MSU extension.

Re: When to plant a new apple tree
The best time to plant in the spring is as soon as the frost has left the ground and the soil has dried out enough that it is not muddy. Normally for us in PA we start planting around the end of March or as soon as conditions allow.

Re: What's Wrong With The Honeycrisp Apples?
As a grower, I am concerned with your bad experiences with Honeycrisp and Fuji and I apologize for the group. If growers are not careful these great new varieties will go the way of the Red Delicious. Sounds like you need to find a local farm market where you can get fresh locally grown apples from ...

Re: gala apples
I have never grown Brookfield Gala, However I grow Buckeye Gala, Kidds D8 Gala, Fulford Gala and Crimson Gala. Of the ones I have experience with, Fulford is the least susceptible to scab, but they are still susceptible. If you want to switch to scab resistant varieties, Goldrush is probably the swe...

Re: Gravenstein
Thanks for the advice. I'm still researching the g series and bud series. They are not widely available from commercial nurseries as of now. I plant 1000+ trees a year so finding the time to bud that many trees a year is next to impossible. However, a great option for the small grower. Rootstock dec...

Re: Why did the Red Winesap and Transparent Apples disappear?
I still grow the Red Winesap apples in my orchard for sale at our roadside stand in PA. It is not grown by many growers anymore. The info Drew provided must have been from the 1940's or 50's. The Yellow Transparent has been replaced by most commercial growers by the Lodi variety. Very similar in tas...

Re: Gravenstein
Unfortunately the Gravenstein variety is very suseptable to fire blight. This is the reason we unfortunately had to remove this variety from our orchards. This was a favorite among the bakers in our community. If someone discovers a control for fire blight, I'd bring this variety back in a heartbeat...

Re: Tree advice please
Two possibilities to consider. If you sprayed Glyphosate (Roundup) on the trunk of the tree during the late summer or fall last season when the tree was storing up reserves for the winter, you could see this type of injury. The second possibility, and this is a long shot, is nickel deficiency. I've ...

Re: Which Apple Variety Do I Have?
To those out there trying to help identify this one...I notice it's a terminal bearer with lots of blind wood. I never saw an apple tree with that growth habit, but maybe someone else will recognize it. The only terminal bearer that I grow that resembles the growth habit is Rome. But Rome are rounde...

Re: Which Apple Variety Do I Have?
It is very difficult to help identify the variety in the spring. You may need to let us see the finished product in the fall. In the fall, pictures of the stem end and the calyx (bottom) would be helpful as well as your opinion on the flavor (sweet, tart, spicy etc) Yes, Appledude means to "thi...
