I would just observe for a while and see what happens. Also, you might try thinin out the tree's fruit by 1/3 ish to try and increase fruit size and quality.

Do you know what rootstock it is on? Do you observe delayed bud break, leaf discoloration, and/or twig dieback? Also, have you had extreme/excessive water this spring? I do not want to jump the gun, because it could just be one of those odd shapes that grow when a tree has a coverin. But collar rot ...

Well, it can be biennial. Have you tried thinning?

Do your other trees flower at the same time as the braeburn? Are you positive it is a dwarf?

I would graft it over instead of cutting it down either way!

I understand Honeycrisp is a bi-annual. That could have alot to do with the quality some years.

It looks like those could have been wounds from canker. Canker will show as a green, mildewish looking stuff on your bark. It will kill wood above the infection as it cuts off the flow of sap.

That sounds like about half of all crab apple trees! heheh It will be tough to find the kind you are looking for with this information. Some other things that may help are... When did it bloom? When did it fruit? What color were the flowers? Did the fruit grow in clusters? You will find many nurseri...
