Re: Calville Blanc

When it arrived, the nursery had already pruned. It was only 4 feet tall when planted but now stands at 7-8 feet. There are nice scaffolding branches growing near the center of the tree and at the top. Makes the Calville Blanc look top heavy. I asked the nursery man and he suggest growing it with a ...

Re: Calville Blanc

Thanks for the input. My Calville Blanc is on M111 root stock. It should grow 60-75% the regular size if it was grown on its own roots. I favor a central leader but looking for information about how others prune their Calville Blanc. Does it grow into a large tree? It has only been in the ground for...

Re: Caring for new trees - growth under tree guard

I used chicken wire with holes big enough for new branches to poke through, however small enough to prevent rodent access. Ifs the branches grow larger before I take down my chicken wire, I can cut the area around the branch to make the opening larger. Hope this helps.

Fearn's Pippin

My Fearn's Pippin has been in the ground two years now and growing well. It has many side branches. How have other apple affectionados pruned their Fearn's Pippin?

Thanks - Mike

Topping off because of excess growth?

Last year when I received my first five trees, they looked like they had been trimmed and topped off at the nursery. Two of my apples (Hewes Virginia and Claville Blanc) are now 6-8 feet tall. Should I top off both? I will post photos sometime within the next week. Thanks - Mike

Re: Best apple varieties for Maryland/Mid-Atlantic region?

I live in south-central PA. Take a look at the apples in my collection. All are growing well even though Calville Blanc seems to be prone to rust. I spray with Bordeaux mixture which keeps rust at bay.

It sounds like codling moth. It is a problem here in central PA. I have been trying organic products to take care of them however may have to fall back on chemical pesticides.

Re: June Drop

The two apple bearing trees dropped most apples last weekend (they are only two years in the ground so maturity the issue?). Don't know if the high winds and torrential rain lat weekend had something to do with it. Both of my crabapple trees seem to have dropped fruit also. I only have one Ananas Re...

Pruning new growth from crotches of apple trees?

This is the second year of my home orchard. I have been pruning the new growth approximately one (1) foot up the side branches off my apples tree trunks. I want to avoid mature branches rubbing against one another to prevent diseases. I have also been doing this on my other fruit trees. Is this comm...
