Re: Squirrel control

Lovely selection. I have been hunting down heritage cultivars myself and Arkansas Black is one! Cinammon SPice sounds interesting also as we do an awful lot of baking and preserves here. Prehaps you would like to trade some scion/budwood in the future? I have Granny Smith, McIntosh and Empire which ...

Re: Squirrel control

I agree with your apple growing aquaintance. Starting with soft skin fruits, such as tomatoes and peaches! My doggies keep the squirrels out so I have no issues there. But luring them away would be my 1st choice aswell. What apples are you growing and where abouts in the world?

Re: leaf curl

I would bet on rosy apple aphids. While large numbers of any type of aphid can stunt new growth and cause sooty mold to develop on fruit and leaves, the rosy apple aphid injects a toxin with its saliva that causes the leaf to curl and the fruit to be distorted. Often these damaged leaves turn bright...

Re: Squirrel control

If the pests do not have access to the trees other than the ground (i.e. they can jump to them from the canopy of other trees) then you should 1st try spraying thouroughly around the base of your apples. This brew is more of a repellant and should keep them well clear of the sprayed areas. Squirrels...

Re: Squirrel control

It sounds pretty good, anything with pepper or castor oil should deter them from eating the fruit after a few tastes. Oils and menth should act as repellants. I know moles hate garlic. So it is prolly a general purpose spray. You will have to use as directed, but I would imagine pepper spray would n...

Re: Squirrel control

Yep, hot pepper spray as mentioned above. If it does not work, you are prolly not getting enough of it on your fruit.

Or you can brew your own...

1tsp tobasco sauce
1tsp chili powder
1/2tsp dishwashing soap
1pt water

Mix the ingredients and spray the ground around the flora you wish to protect.

Re: Squirrel control

You could trap them. Or place out bird seed in feeders away from your fruits and try to bait them away. Otherwise I believe ther are rodent repellants such as hot pepper was and garlic sprays which are natural and wash of easily and make the fruit unappealing to them.

Good luck!

Re: Gravenstein

I plan to grow a small sample of this old cultivar in my collection! But you are right, they do not keep well as most earlier ripening apples do not. It actually is believed to have originated in germany and brought to america by russian settelers in the 1800s. They are also unique as they thrive in...

Re: A 20 year project

Most apple trees need a second apple or crab apple tree that blooms in the same season to pollinize, which will produce fruit. Prehaps your other apple tree is not suitable as a pollinizer.

Re: What are all these little green bugs, aphids?

Dishsoap and water will kill them, spray directly on them. They are also repelled by the scent of garlic.
