Re: Gala apples on Bud 9

What zone are you in? Gala can be a bit prone to scab, but that's not too much of a problem if you grow them for cider / juice.

Re: Late cropping trees, UK

Many late-ripening varieties will hold on to their apples if you let them, however a much simpler method of providing bird food is to pick the apples as normal and keep them in a cold garage, then put a few out on a table, sliced in half, over the winter months.

Re: Bramleys in Spain?

Bramley can grow successfully in Mediterranean climates (including Spain, southern California etc). On a related point, we are often asked to suggest "local" varieties, which people see as somehow better-suited to their area. In reality the provenance of a variety is rarely a reliable indi...

Re: Cox Orange Pippin on M106 vs EMLA 106

I doubt the rootstock has anything to do with it. I think what you are referring to are the various clones of Cox that are available, some of which are (incidentally) self-sterile and some of which are self-fertile. For example there is a form called SF18 which is usually known as Queen Cox, which i...

Re: Is it dead or alive?

You could try cutting a few inches off the top or off a main shoot to see if the wood inside is green. At this stage the best thing to do is probably to wait for spring, if the tree is alive the buds on the stem and main shoots will start to swell. Good luck!

Re: Growing a tree from seed/grafting

Northern Spy was indeed used in the development of the MM-series rootstocks, but you will not get a MM111 rootstock from planting Northern Spy pips. Firstly, the pip will be a new variety, inheriting 50% of its characteristics from the pollen parent, which could have been any other nearby variety. S...

Re: can KINGSTON BLACK be used in sweet cider

I am not certain of the answer but Kingston Black is a bittersharp cider apple, not very palatable, so I would not expect the juice to be of use for sweet cider.

Re: scion for Api etoile and Hauer pippin apples

In fairness to Trees of Antiquity, collecting and shipping small quantities of scionwood is unlikely to be cost-effective on a small scale. I'm surprised Cornell doesn't have these varieties.

Try GoldRush or Enterprise. Fuji and Granny Smith are also very late.

Re: Ildrod Pigeon

I think this variety is held at the UK National Fruit Collection at Brogdale Farm. If you are in the UK or EU you should be able to request graftwood from them (there is a nominal cost).

There is a bit more to it than that.

Have a look at this article on our sister website, which tries to cover all the factors involved:

Re: Replacement for Golden Russet

I think Newtown Pippin can be a bit susciptible to cedar apple rust too.

Ashmeads Kernel, mentioned by Nevil, is probably a bit resistant.

Arkansas Black, Roxbury Russet, Winesap are all fairly resistant.

I would say not Kidds Orange Red, because the stripes look a bit too prominent.

Re: Identify Mini-Apple

It's quite difficult to identify apples at this point in the season, better to wait until they are ripe! It does sound like it could be one of the red-fleshed varieties.

Re: Zestar Disease Issue?

You should always cut back 1-year bare-root trees on planting, with the possible exception of those on very vigorous rootstocks. The reason is that the roots get damaged during the transplanting process, and the aerial part can then put too much demand on the roots when spring starts. By cutting bac...
