Re: Replacement for Golden Russet
I'd give you advice if I could, but my Newton Pippin is only a year in the ground (at least at my house) and has one apple.

Re: Stanley Plums
After the fruit fell off this year again on their own, I have decided to chop down this tree. When Richard visited last year he mentioned that the tree did not look like a Stanley. It grows so quickly I should have known it was not a Stanley  . I will order one this autumn again and replant o...
Re: Hello?
It's similar on other sites I have visited. On the fruitcommunity.com website, the guy who started the site replies to my posts (which I do about once a month). So you could go over there and read all five of my posts!
Start the sixth thread! hahaha!

Re: Hello?
I noticed how quiet it was around here as well. I thought things would have ramped up more in the late winter, but they didn't. Richard comes on and answers questions people have, but the community isn't chatty.

Re: Hello from Eastern Tennessee
It's not just an old guy's thing! I'm not even in my mid 30's yet and I have a little home orchard. Don't even have any family in the orcharding business. I'm hoping that by the time I get to be your age, I will have a well established orchard!

Re: Not Allowing Fruit To Grow In 2nd year
Ok, thanks for the clarification. They are all on MM111, so i'm guessing that I can leave them be and see if I get any fruit. I assume they are all about 3 years old now because they were not tiny when the shipment arrived last year. That being said, i'm pretty new to it all and am learning on the f...

Not Allowing Fruit To Grow In 2nd year
I can't remember where I read this, but I swear I read that you shouldn't allow your 2nd year trees to get past the flowering stage (IE don't let the fruit grow). Is this true? Does it matter? The reasoning I read/heard was to make the tree concentrate on growing it's limbs and roots. In all honesty...

Re: Stanley Plums
I was looking at Stanley Plums at a local nursery when we were buying some veggie plants. Thought about buying one, but i'm putting in 10 blueberry highbushes this weekend so I might hold off until next summer.

Re: Planting Garden Delicious Apple Dwarf
Well, I think this spring is when I'm going to plant my apple trees. I do have another question though. The apple trees will be going right where to old tree are currently planted. I'd say they are easily 20 years old maybe more. So there root system is nice and established. I was going to cut them...

Re: Equipment for sale
I saw one of my local orchards is selling a Belshaw doughnut machine.
"We currently have a donut machine for sale. Belshaw Robot 42. Asking $2000. Call 989-695-2465 and leave a message for John."
The website is www.greenapplebarn.com
Good luck!

Re: Hard Cider
I like Angry Orchard above ones like Woodchuck mainly because of who owns it. Angry Orchard is owned by Sam Adams, a macrobrewery with a microbrewery mindset. That takes it a bit above Crispin, which is owned by MillerCoors. Uncle Johns is alright. In my opinion, their best one is the blueberry appl...

Hard Cider
Ok everyone! What is your favorite hard cider? I'm in Michigan, so apples are plentiful (except last year.) There is a place on the west side of the state called Vander Mill. They make a hard cider in a 30 gallon batch and put cinnamon roasted pecans in it. Not only does it change the flavor slightl...

Plan for 2013?
Ok everyone! It's about time to get working on our orchards! What is everyone doing this year? Planting new trees? Topworking? Maintaining? Planting different fruit? I just planted last year so I don't need much work to be done. I acquired a dwarf braeburn tree that I had a hard time keeping alive (...

Re: Ground moles, grubs, and nematodes
That's what I read as well. The nemotodes attack the roots of the trees and hinder growth. I'd rather not use regular chemicals, which is what I think my neighbors use, because they never have mole hills in their yards. It's pretty gross in May/June/July when all the grubs turn to June Bugs and fly ...

Ground moles, grubs, and nematodes
Ok, so here is my problem. My yard is constantly getting torn up by ground moles. They are there because I have grubs. I read that the best non chemical way to get rid of them is by using nematodes. I have also read that nematodes can harm the roots of trees. So, has anyone had issues with grubs and...
