Re: A year long quest...what is this apple?

Looks like a Fuji. Depending on how old the tree was and where it was located, could have been eaten and the core thrown away by a hiker or left in animal droppings.

Re: Stanley Plums

After the fruit fell off this year again on their own, I have decided to chop down this tree. When Richard visited last year he mentioned that the tree did not look like a Stanley. It grows so quickly I should have known it was not a Stanley  . I will order one this autumn again and replant or...

Re: Ananas Reinette

Here are two pictures of the flowers. Had to prune out a lot of set fruit.

Ananas Reinette is a strong grower/resilient and does not require the attention of my other trees. The only thing that seems to bother it are ants forming aphid colonies on the new growth.

Try this link for: http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/3000/pdf/HYG_3204_08.pdf Disease looks similar to blossum rot on tomatoes which inidcates a lack of zinc. The bulletin says to apply fungicides containing zinc (Zn) ions! The fungicides are easy to find or purchase a fertilizer made of fish emulsio...

Re: Hello?

Hi Dave, I have started posting/visiting again. Check my posts on Magness pear, Ananas Reinette, and Nehou. My apple trees are doing well this year. Four apple and two crab apple trees have set fruit. Mike

Re: Magness Pear

05/31/2013 Update: The Magness produced flowers this year but set no fruit (it is only the second year in my collection). It will probably be a few more years before it will set fruit. I do not know of any other pear trees in the general area farmland (I walk my dog every day along the country roads...

Re: Sawfly

I observed cedar rust on several of my apple trees Friday so sprayed with Copper spray. I read the label and it says it is also good as an insecticide. Might give that a try.

I have also heard that Kaolin clay is used to protect trees from a host of bugs but I was unable to find any this year.

Ananas Reinette

My three year old tree flowered heavily this year. This tree has nice compact growth habit. After three years it is only five feet high (when I planted it was about 3 feet). Trunk is already 2 inch thick at the base. All branches are at about 1 cm in diameter. Each branch and trunk have been covered...

Re: Calville Blanc

Earlier this year I was checking the top of the tree (about 9 feet high) and the top two feet of the tree broke off completely. The tree currently has many side branches starting and will thin out accordingly. Successfully pollinated several flowers so thinning out weaker growing fruit in order to o...

Re: Fearn's Pippin

I/the bees successfully cross-pollinated the single rosette of flowers. I am watching as the fruits develop and thinning out the weaker growing; plan to leave only one apple/cluster (I want the apple to be as big as possible).

BTW - Fearn's Pippin seems to be a tip bloomer.

Re: name that crabapple

Are you sure it is not a flowering quince? Mine have reddish-pink flowers and bushy like yours. I have two and they produce little yellow fruits. Thay are only in the ground the third spring now, but I expect when they are matured will resemble yours. BTW - does it have a few stickers or short dried...

Re: What pest prevention/treatment should I do in Seattle

Before any of the buds break, I plan to spray dormant oil to smother insect eggs. Painting the lower portion of the trunk will prevent damage to the wood over the winter (spliting because of sun scald). also, painting the circumference of the trunk near the ground with a sticky substance will keep t...

Re: Dormant Oil Spray

What are you trying to do? Force them into dormancy? The only way to do that is cooler weather. Get rid of bugs? Experiment! Spray one branch on one tree and wait a week or two. If the leaves drop, trim the branch and check the wood to verify if still is viable. If you are tyring to be "organic...
