Re: Effects of climate warming and increased CO2 in Apples
Not sure that it will the increased CO2 will make any wild differences in your own orchard, but it never hurts to plant lots of apple trees anyway! I find the extremely hot summers some localities are receiving a cause for concern tho. Some berries and perhaps some apples or other fruits tend to &qu...

Re: Macedonian apples
Wow, good post with the element of mystery in it! Who knows what they are? They might be regionally shared types only, maybe they have never crossed the ocean, who knows?? Probably pictures and stuff could be compared with known apple books and pic's on the internet to get a tentative ID. Got pictur...

Is it especially limber, or what?
Crossing limbs, water sprouts, etc is what I would take off.

Re: where in australia can i find a crispin tree
It could be hiding from you under the name "Mutsu". Or not. I have heard that the Brits had a real grievance against all things Japanese after WWII, and refused to call this apple Mutsu.
Hope you find your tree!

Re: Finnish Cider
Good question, but I am sure that with all your plantings you'll be able to dial in something that you like to drink.
I've wondered how hops would go in cider. Might be real bitter and good!

Been a long time since I have eaten one, but it was good. The tree tends to be pretty vigorous, so don't crowd it. Give it some room.

Re: Best sweet disease free Cherry for adding to a SE US orc
Here in the Northwest there is alot of prunus virus' that inhabit neighborhoods. Some of them will actually make cherries sick trees, but not kill outright, and with great attenuation of fruit size and or yield. Other viruses just kill the cherry tree outright. I have taken down 2 Bings and a Ranier...

Nice list of fireblight resistant apples [urlhttp://www.caf.wvu.edu/kearneysville/tables/fbsus.html]HERE[/url]. I saw Gold Delish on it. Didn't spend alot of time studying it. The more pollen sources you have the merrier, of course. Don't make them all the same tree though! This is a truism for plum...

Re: Book of Ours
... so what's up with pruning? Why do it? Pruning reduces biomass and canopy and can't be anything but growth inhibiting. Hi Chuck! Summer pruning in August certainly tames my trees down a bit, but winter pruning merely invigorates them the next season. Reason for this? I usually do not prune the r...

Re: Peasgood Nonsuch
If you are going to keep the tree in a pot for this year I would recommend something quite a bit larger! The one it is in sounds too small for such a tall tree. Gonna be alot heavier to lift around, etc. An alternative to transplanting would be to prune the tree severely short and tape up the split ...

Re: Best apple varieties for Maryland/Mid-Atlantic region?
There's a very nice PDF on cedar apple rust at this LINK It would be fun if you tried mini-trees of lots of kinds and did your own grafting. I know that is asking alot of some folks though! Apples graft very easily. You could trial a hundred foot row of apples on m-27 rootstock and have them planted...
