Re: Apples Are GOOD For You!
I have heard that the Vitamin C content decays rapidly after picking.

Re: Fearn's Pippin question
I would have expected it to have bloomed from about year 3 or 4.

Re: Info needed on m26 cordon apple varieties suitable
These all look suitable for your area, apart from the Falstaff, which is prone to scab in wetter climates.
M26 is quite vigorous for a cordon, M9 rootstock might be a better choice.

Re: Similar to Granny Smith
Sturmer Pippin is quite similar to Granny Smith - but also unlikely to ripen in your area.
Instead, why not try some cooking apple varieties - they will have the acidity of Granny Smith, if not the dense texture.

Re: apple tree transferring to pot roots question
I doubt that will do any harm. I would use the largest possible pots you can find if you want to keep them safely for several years.

Re: Anyone know what is going on with my apple tree? Thanks!
Apple trees expect a period of winter chill, and this causes them to drop their leaves in the fall and go into dormancy. I think the problem you are seeing is likely caused by the lack of cold temperatures, so the leaves are decaying but not actually falling off as they should do.

When did you get the tree, and when was this photo taken? Have you kept it indoors (it seems very close to the house)?

Re: Rootstock help needed please!
Go with the MM106 - much easier to look after, and you will get apples at a younger age too.

Good enough to eat
I found this article in a British newspaper: http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2006/sep/16/food.foodanddrink In this paragraph he writes-off several very nice apples: "They have been selected above all for one characteristic: that they can be picked when unripe (so they bruise less easily)...

If you are in the UK, you can send samples to the National Fruit Collection - they have a fruit identification service.

Re: own rooted apple trees
Nurse-grafting on to M27 followed by planting with the union buried the following season is a good approach. However I think you will need to experiment for a few years before you can go into production. It's a very hit and miss technique in my experience.

Zestar! is very early bloom, not mid-season.
Try Antonovka, Red Free, or Worcester Pearmain.

Re: Apple Variety
Red Windsor (Alkmene) seems to be reliably self-fertile, and is happy in a typical UK summer with not too much sun! However I agree with Chuck that self-fertility is a variable thing, and having another compatible variety nearby seems to help. The well-known Cox Orange Pippin is actually available i...
