Apple recommendations appreciated

Post by PA_Docent » Thu Apr 19, 2012 2:33 am

How about sharing our collection of trees? I only have place for another 2-3 apple trees in my home orchard so searching for apples that are great eating fresh and store well; any recommendations would be appreciated. Here is a listing of the trees and their uses in my home orchard to start off the rant:

Ananas Reinette (eating)
Ashmead's Kernel (eating)
Belle de Boskoop (eating)
Calville Blanc d'Hiver (eating and cooking)
Cox's Orange Pippin (eating)
Esopus Spitzenburg (eating)
Fearn's Pippin (eating)
Golden Russet (eating)
Hewes Crab (pollination and cidre/vinegar)
Kingston Black (cidre/vinegar)
Muscat de Bernay (cidre/vinegar)
Nehou (cidre/vinegar)
Siberian Crab (pollination and cidre/vinegar)
Tremlett's Bitter (cidre/vinegar)

I plan to experiment with cidres when all my trees are in full production but I read that cidre made with Tremlett's Bitter is good on its own.

Most of these are ~2yr whips so I really cant recommend anything too strongly. But heres my list. Are you zone 5 or 6? I might recommend Pink Lady or a Granny Smith because their late season apple (harvest in November) and keep well. Or an early season apple? Zestar, Williams Pride, Summer Rambo August (Harvest in August) *Early Season apples usually don't keep that well.

Nice collection and thanks for the recommendations. Candidates under consideration for 2013 are:
Blue Pearmain
Jefferis
Winter Banana

Two others that I found and are strong contenders are:
Winesap
Red Berplesch

I still have several months before I make my order so let me know what you think!

Thanks! Mike
