Pruning new growth from crotches of apple trees?

Post by PA_Docent »

This is the second year of my home orchard. I have been pruning the new growth approximately one (1) foot up the side branches off my apples tree trunks. I want to avoid mature branches rubbing against one another to prevent diseases. I have also been doing this on my other fruit trees.

Is this common practice? Should I be clearing this growth any further up the side branches? If the wording is confusing can post pictures.
