I have a granny smith apple tree. About 3 years ago we placed bark around it to help seal in moisture. I'm not sure which state the bark came from, but the following year the apples started getting this strange crust on them. It looks like a parasite or a disease, but I can't find anything that looks like what we have. It's a reddish brown color, it's usually a small spot on the apple and crusts up and looks like its coming out of a hole. It leaves holes in the apples, does anyone know what this is :?: I will try to attach pictures when I get them. My email is lagging today though. Thank you for your time. -Kt

It sounds like codling moth. It is a problem here in central PA. I have been trying organic products to take care of them however may have to fall back on chemical pesticides.
