Hello
attached are photos of a small, apple-like fruit growing on a tree in Southern France - Could anyone suggest what variety they might be and if they are edible?
Many thanks

Re: could anyone identify these apples?
Looks like medlars, which are not apples but very closely related. I have never tasted them myself, but based on what I have read they are delicious. You cannot eat them like an apple but rather you need to let them age for a few weeks. After they turn to mush they are supposed to taste sweet like applesauce. I would love to taste them someday.

Yes, that's exactly what they are - Google confirms this - thanks SO much for your help
