Loosen Tie-Downs

Post by Chuck Rhode »

I thought maybe last Sunday was silver-tip, but I looked again today. Hmm, I don't think so. There may be one tree that has just begun to bud out, but the season is early and cold yet, and any signs of Spring are in my imagination.

All my dwarf apple trees on B9 and M26 are staked. This evening after work I made the rounds of my backyard orchard and checked all the plastic chain ties to be sure they were loose. I found one I had to cut off and one that was broken. The rest were OK, or I was able to adjust them by loosening them and moving them up the trunk. I wanted to be sure they didn't get too tight during the spring growth. I'll check again in midsummer.

It's been a long winter here in Sheboygan, WI. The sun stayed up later today though, softening the plastic through a long evening.
