What Apple?

Post by Gnu Patterson »

Thought I'd say hello here and ask a question at the same time. I am 57 and a male, well I was last time i looked.

I live in an old apple growing region in Australia, I have 35 acres and 2 large dams surrounded by bush, nearest neighbour is 0.5 k's away, we have hundreds of kangaroos, wallabies, the odd echidna and plenty of other wildlife including eagles and the odd Fallow Deer. Most of my land I have leased to a local farmer for about 50 sheep.

My place is an old orchard, I still have the old cool room. The fruit trees have all gone on my land, apart from a few next to the house, I also have many other fruit trees including some olive trees. There still are many orchards here but imports are killing them off, absurd really bringing in subsidised fruit dumped from overseas. Some of the smaller ones have turned into cideries.

We are coming into autumn, starting to get frosts, most of the fruit has been harvested, as I was out for a walk with the dog, in a hard to get at area somewhat sheltered from the worst of the frosts for now, I saw some bush like trees with large yellow fruit on them. I climbed down and grabbed some of the fruit. They are yellow and quite large, in the photo the top right is 10cm across.

Does anyone have any idea what kind they are, I want to get them before the frost spoils them and make some jams, purees or chutneys with them.
