Granny smith fruit fall off problems

Post by Langhaven »

We planted our dwarf granny smith tree three years ago and were thrilled to find about 13 apples on it this year. The fruit is the size of an acorn at this point. Sadly, dh has not had the time to spray it. Now, the stems of the apples are turning yellow, brittle and the fruit is falling off the tree. I might add that we have had a tremendous amount of rain this year. The tree is incredibly healthy looking.

Can anyone give me tips on how to prevent this problem next year. I was really looking forward to having some apples this year, even if just a few.

Thank you!

This is normal. Depending on your location, I would call this the "june drop". You will have many appear to set, and only a small percent actually set fruit. If this is your first year for fruit on the tree, I would expect 1 - 5 apples at most.
Large private orchard. Sells apples, other fruits as well as trees locally
