Fastest growing, highest producing.

Post by Kelpy »

I am looking at planting some apple trees for the wildlife (deer, bears, etc.) and was wondering what trees produce the most and grow the fastest (or at least reach maturity the quickest)?

My climate is the pacific northwest and has plenty of fog and moisture. Sunlight isn't always the most plentiful, even during the summer.

Thanks for any help, Kelpy

You might inquire of a good old fashion Mom & Pop nursery in your area to find your exact needs. Often they know what rootstocks are best, and what apples have done really well in your climate. Don't forget the pollination factor too. One apple tree all by itself is liable to set a very sparse crop every year if it cannot get foreign pollen.

European plum trees might work well in your climate. Vigorous varieties on St. Julien rootstocks can easily put on 3ft-4ft on each of the main shoots in the first years.
