Good enough to eat

I found this article in a British newspaper:
http://www.theguardian.com/environment/ ... odanddrink
In this paragraph he writes-off several very nice apples:
"They have been selected above all for one characteristic: that they can be picked when unripe (so they bruise less easily) and still look good on the shelf. The fact that they taste of Kleenex soaked in Diet Coke is neither here nor there."
He then has a go at Egremont Russet, which is capable of very good flavours and textures, but has the misfortune to be sold in supermarkets!
Even though it is an old article, it is frustrating to see such nonsense being published in a serious newspaper. In fairness, he is encouraging readers to grow their own apple trees, but it is pretty clear this is a journalist who is not frightened to let his own ill-informed opinion get in the way of actual research into his subject!
