Do to the severe winter and deep snow here in Michigan mice decided to chew the bark off the bottom of my apple trees. Will they surely die now?

What is the diameter of where the mice chewed? Are these mature trees? If so, then the mice will have chewed off the bark only and not the sapwood that carries the food to the rest of the tree. If they chewed into the Cambrian (the part that carries food to the roots), no idea what may happen.

Are the buds nice and full or dried out? I would wait until the spring and cover the base with tree paint or tar.
