Rootstock help needed please!

Hi everyone!
I'm pretty new to the whole apple growing lark so would appreciate some help...
I've got a dwarf Elstar tree but I want to use a cutting from it to grow a larger tree. This will be in my garden so I obviously don't want it growing too big. My two options for which rootstock to use are either MM106 or to use a seedling from the local crabapple.
I want a decent crop of apples eventually so I'm wondering whether limiting myself with the MM106 is the best way to go or if it would be better to use the standard rootstock but keep on top of it by pruning? Is that easy enough to do or will I be fighting a monster??

Thanks in advance,
Tim

Go with the MM106 - much easier to look after, and you will get apples at a younger age too.

Thanks for the advice Richard. I'll go down the mm106 route then I think. How long would you let the rootstock bed in for before grafting?

Plant the rootstock this spring and then bud-graft in July.
