Foxwhelp Imposter?
Has anybody else heard that the Foxwhelp cider apple that is passed around in the USA is probably a rootstock plant, and not the real Foxwhelp from England?

Interesting the UK national fruit collection doesn't have the "original" Foxwhelp, but has a popular sport called Broxwood Foxwhelp. I have just added an entry and some ID photos for the Broxwood sport to the site so you can compare the US and UK versions.

Thank you Richard.
But if that ARS-GRIN apple is the imposter .....

Re: Foxwhelp Imposter?
If the Foxwhelp variety you are growing turns out to me medium to large and is mainly rough skinned with a light pinkish hue it is now being called "Fauxwhelp". True Foxwhelp is a small to medium bright red apple.
I have both Foxwhelp and Fauxwhelp and they are completely different. Fauxwhelp is great to eat out of hand. John Bunker at Fedco was the first person I read calling the not Foxwhelp apple Fauxwhelp.

Re: Foxwhelp Imposter?
Hello Appledude/Plumfan <g>,
Well my Fauxwhelp is less intense in color, more whitish pink I would describe it. The image you posted the link too looks more like the original Foxwhelp except it might be larger. Who knows about the size though, pictures can be deceptive.
Any exploring this past fall looking for exceptional wild fruit trees? Some of the scions you sent me from our trade a couple of years ago have grown like crazy. The Red Tipperling especially. How did the tree you named Red Tipperling do this year?
Let me know if you want to do any scion trading this coming year.
