Just bought this variety in a container which has split down the side so needs to be replaced. The young tree is 6 feet from top of a container that is 9.5" high & 10" across. Should I do so & into a slightly larger container at this stage of the winter? It's not frosty but it could become so in coming weeks. The alternative is to put the tree/container into a larger pot until the risk of frost is past - maybe March/April? I might be moving later this year so I need to keep it in a container; when re-located I plan to train it into an espalier along a trellis or fence - do you know if this variety would be suitable for this treatment?

If you are going to keep the tree in a pot for this year I would recommend something quite a bit larger! The one it is in sounds too small for such a tall tree. Gonna be alot heavier to lift around, etc.

An alternative to transplanting would be to prune the tree severely short and tape up the split pot with duct tape.

Planting in the ground is always the best course of action, when you can do it.
