Need list of all cedar rust resistant apples

Post by boomer »

I live in N. AL. I am having problem with cedar rust on some of my newly planted apple trees, especially my Gala and Fuji trees. I would like to buy several more varieties that are cedar rust resistant.

You do realize that resistant doesn't mean immune. There are degrees of resistance.

I don't know how much testing has actually been done. Apparently there has been some, but it's inconceivable that known varieties could be comprehensively covered.

Your best bet is to shorten the list to varieties that you like, that are available and that are plant-hardiness-zone appropriate and then strike those known to be susceptible. You can read nurseryman's ads for representations of disease resistance or consult the varietal descriptions here. These are a few varieties I've dredged up that people claim have some:

Baldwin
Carroll
Chestnut Crab
Enterprise
Fireside
Grimes Golden
Honeygold
Jerseymac
Jonafree
Jonamac
Keepsake
Lakeland
Liberty
Lobo
Macoun
McIntosh
Mollies Delicious
Niagara
Nova Easy Gro
Paula Red
Prairie Spy
Priscilla
Raritan
Red Delicious
Redfree
Regent
Rusty Coat
Sansa
Scotia
Shenandoah
Spencer
Stayman Varieties
Sungold
Williams Pride
Winesap
Wolf River
Yellow Transparent

See, also "Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae." Wikipedia. 17 Aug. 2011. 17 Feb. 2012 <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gymnospora ... ae#Control>.

Your mileage may vary, no substitutions allowed, for a limited time only while supplies last, offer void where prohibited ....

Thank you Chuck. Yes, you are correct. From my understanding (R) resistant does not mean they are totally resistant to cedar rust but show some abilities of resistance. (VR) Very resistance apple varieties are the only true resistant apples.

I wonder if even very resistant varieties are actually 100% proof, although some breeding programs may claim "field immunity", but lab field conditions are still not the real world. Some varieties might be truly very resistant but these are really arbitrary classifications. Also most apple diseases work on an annual cycle (or even less) whereas the apple tree, once planted, cannot evolve so quickly.

I am planting a Williams Pride this week. This will be my first of the modern, disease resistant apple trees.

Hey Boomer, I'm up here in central KY and I have the same issues with cedar apple rust. I talked with the folks at Cummins Nursery this year about my needs and here is what I ended up going with for resistance to cedar apple rust: Ark Black, Enterprise, Freedom, Liberty, Priscilla, Redfree, Sundance, and Williams Pride. Hopefully they'll be doing well in a few years and producing some delicious apples. Also, I had planted a Liberty and a Jonafree last year and the Jonafree showed the rust blemishes on the leaves but the Liberty about 20 ft away didn't show any at all. Good luck with your endeavors!

Boomer - If you already have trees planted, try Bordeaux spray when you see the small yellow-orange specks on the leaves. My Calville Blanc was attacked last summer so I sprayed all my fruit trees and the Calville Blanc survived and grew well last year (I do nto recommend this tree for someone just starting to get into fruit trees). Second year on and it looks like it is forming blossoms! Mike

BTW - When spraying trees already affected with cedar rust, it is a good idea to spray the soil out beyond the tree line. Spores of cedar rust may have fallen to the ground and if it rains, the spores will re-infect the tree.

Thanks everyone!

Well this year I planted 27 Redfree and 27 Liberty. So far, I noticed only a little cedar rust on the leaves, although I would say most of the leaves were unaffected. On the otherhand, my stayman winesap, grimes golden, and honeycrisp got hit pretty hard by the cedar rust. The VR brands worked as advertised. The R brands did not do so well. The Grimes Golden, which is (R) resistant to C.A.R. was a hit and miss, meaning some trees got hit hard and others did not do so well. Not sure if they were two different strains of Grimes Golden. I have a few VS apple trees which did terrible. They were covered with Cedar rust. Perhaps my property is not the best area for testing as my land is covered with red cedar trees.

Next year, hopefully I will be trying Zestar, Sansa, Malcoun, and the Suncrisp.

My Golden Russet was rust prone and was knocked over in a freak storm earlier this year. No way I could have saved it so plan to replace with Goldrush. Goldrush has a pleasant tart crisp texture and supposed to be very resistant to cedar rust.

If you want to try cider apples, go with Nehou and/or Hewes (both available from Trees of Antiquity). They have proven to be resistant *Hewes more than Nehou) to cedar rust here in central Pennsylvania.

Also, Macoun and Jefferis has proven to be resistant to cedar rust this year, at least in S. PA; I have a mature mountain cedar next door (too bad my neighbor won't chop it down).
