Tip or spur bearing?

Post by Lelama »

Hello, I have two varieties of apple, Reinette Clochard and King of the Pippin's. Does anyone know if they are tip or spur bearing. I want to make sure I adopt the right pruning technique.
Many thanks

I think King of the Pippins is a spur-bearer.

According to 'The New Book of Apples', by Joan Morgan and Alison Richards, both are spur bearers, but it says that 'Reinette Clochard' is a triploid, which means it won't pollenate 'King of the Pippins', so you need a third suitable pollen partner, so that it and KotP can pollenate RC and each other, unless there's a suitable tree growing somewhere nearby. (That's assuming you've recently planted them: if you've had them some time, and they both fruit well, there must be another pollen partner nearby.)
My apples: Brownlees' Russet, Bramley's Seedling, Dabinett, James Grieve, Egremont Russet, Cottenham Seedling, Tom Putt, Ribston Pippin, Isaac Newton's Tree.
