Re: Good varieties for selling?
You should consider growing some cider apples. There is a demand and you could probably put a premium on them.

Re: red fleshed apple
I'm in Michigan, USA. There is an orchard within a half hour drive of my house that has multiple varieties of red fleshed apples. They make some awesome hard cider from the red fleshed apples. Check out this juice being pressed! https://i2.wp.com/ciderchat.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/pressing-red...

Re: Spray on Opal apples?
I have a buddy who is a fourth generation apple grower and i've heard him say some interesting things about spraying. The chemicals they use are almost identical. Organic orchards have to spray two or three times more than conventional orchards. If they spray correctly, whether organic or convention...

Hauer Pippin
I've had Hauer Pippins that I harvested on Halloween sit in the fridge until April or May and still have crunch. Large, firm, tart, late apple that lasts a heck of a long time. I'm in 6a basically on the border with 5b.

There is a big listing of apples places on this website. Click orchards under the Orange Pippin logo at the top and find one close to you.

Re: Ripe enough for Cider?
Cut an apple in half. If the seeds are dark and free, it's ripe. If they aren't dark and are held into place pretty well, let them grow more.

Re: where to get young sapling apple trees in Eastern Ontari
I live in Eastern Ontario and own a 100 acre farm. I would like to plant a small orchard of apple trees about 1- 2 acres worth. Is there a supplier of young fruit trees that I can purchase from instead of going to the local Canadian Tire store where they seem to be rather costly. any advice would b...

Re: Apple variety pairing advice needed for new grower
Plant a crabapple to pollinate your trees. Crabapples in my collection include Nehou, Siberian, Hewes Virginia, and Whitney (are all good polliators). Nehou and Hewes bloom the longest. Check Orange Pippin or Trees of Antiquity for these crabappples. Michael Please tell me you make cider with all t...

Re: Apple Varieties true from Seed ?
I believe that Shiawassee does as well, but it's a Snow/Fameuse offspring. I'm trying to remember what other ones were listed as growing as "true to seed" in Tom Burford's book that i've been reading.

Re: How to get started as a true apple lover?
Find your local farmers market. Find your local orchards. Buy some of each apple you can find and take notes on what you like and what you don't. I know it seems pretty basic, but it's a good place to start.
