Re: Topping off because of excess growth?

This should get you started. http://extension.psu.edu/adams/programs/master-gardener/home-orchards Once you establish the shape of your tree, then maintaining a height low enough that you can spray and pick is important for a home orchard. I have a pair of loppers that are about 30" long. I kee...

Re: Pruning

Rick, I will try to take a few pictures tomorrow. If you are here in the states then a call to your Extension office will get you good pruning advice.

You did not post what zone you are in so one problem could be warm winters or lack of sun.

Not much information to go on.

Re: Cox's Orange Pippen

Well thank you. I started it to keep up with all it takes to grow fruit in the deep South. When you get your tree add a picture to this thread if you would like. I think that would be interesting.

Re: Graywater irrigation

Just tore out a young Pettingill that developed some kind of nasty canker. Is it OK to plant a new tree in the same spot? From my reading, it is written, it is not a good idea to replant in the same hole so I would say there is a gamble there. How close to the old hole is too close, that I do not k...

Re: Got a question for everyone

If you are located here in the States, then get in touch with your local Extension agent, They will have a lot of free, or nearly free information for you on growing apples in your area. Look for planting and initial pruning information for your area. It may be your trees come pruned but if they are...

Re: Graywater irrigation

Soil testing might preclude in surprise build up of chemicals but I have no experience in gray water use to back that up. Hard to say on over watering since we don't know how dry it is there or soil conditions. We have been in a bad drought since last September, The soil is sandy here. My five-six y...

Re: Home Orchard Spray Program

Just saw this on the new label for Bonide Fruit Tree Spray concentrate for spraying apple trees. Do not exceed 2 applications per year. Do not apply within 14 days of harvest. Minimum retreatment interval 7 days Before this the limit was 8 applications on apples. The limitation to 2 applications on ...

Re: Sprayer

It comes with a long hook up wire so I have put it in a small utility trailer I pull behind an old Snapper lawnmower tractor. The hook up wire goes to the tractor battery. The advantage of putting it in the trailer is a great place to quickly put down the spray hose. I pull up next to the tree, get ...

Sprayer

Chuck here is a picture and a link to the one I have. It happens to be on sale http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200394108_200394108 The next size up has a larger pump so if you bought the optional agitator kit, it would work better but the the tank is larger. This is my first season wi...

Re: Book of Ours

I went to an electric, ten gallon pump sprayer this year to make spraying a bit easier. Ooh, do tell. I may be in the market. Is this a backpack? I see some huge capacity backpacks that I imagine OSHA would have a fit over. Chuck I will start a new Sprayer thread to keep from pushing your thread of...

Re: Book of Ours

I have the first apples on my summer apples already. Most of my pruning evolves around keeping an open structure for drying and spraying. I keep all of my trees in an open vase shape so it is easy to keep the height down for spraying. I went to an electric, ten gallon pump sprayer this year to make ...
