Re: Apples, plums and cherries, Gulf Islands, British Columb
Your climate is quite similar to the southern parts of the UK, so you may find that English varieties such as Cox, which don't always do well in the more continental climates of the US, can be grown in your area. It's not disease resistant though!

Re: How does one identify apple varieties?
There are 2 methods, either experience and / or use of a key. There are lots of key-based identification systems. Try this one for example: http://www.applename.com/ Provenance is often very important too. Also remember that bloom and ripening times are always relative - so you say your ones are ver...

Re: PLEASE HELP! Pollination ?'s
Yes, GoldRush and Galarina should be compatible. Galarina is not well known so that is probably why you don't see much about it.

Hi Pat,
unfortunately it is not a specific apple, but a composite and stylized image created many years ago by our graphic designer!

Re: Spray on Opal apples?
Don't confuse organic, GMO, and un-treated. Any apple variety can be grown organically, even a GMO apple. Similarly, any apple variety can be grown without treatments, including GMO apples. There are hardly any GMO apple varieties. Apples grown organically are usually subjected to a regular spray pr...

Re: Growing a tree from seed/grafting
As noted in my previous reply, apples do not grow true from seed. Since most orchard pollinators are crab-apples, your tree is most likely a cross between Pink Lady and a crab-apple.

Try Siloam Orchards, near Newmarket. They sell trees too. Most US-based suppliers can't ship to Canada because of phytosanitary restrictions.

I agree with Mike. Trees planted this late in the season may struggle to establish - keep them well watered.

Hi Mike. It sounds like you are interested in European plums, so how about Oullins Gage or Count Althann's Gage (also known as Reine Claude Conducta)?

Re: So much blossom.
The blossom period does seem to have lasted longer than usual this spring - I'm in the north of England. I've been recording blossom dates for most of my trees on the Orange Pippin tree register, and over the years there is as much as 4 weeks difference.

Re: Apple variety pairing advice needed for new grower
Usually 3 different apple varieties would probably cross-pollinate, but Winesap is a triploid variety and therefore not a good pollinator of other varieties. Empire and McIntosh are very closely-related so may not pollinate each other effectively, although you should still get something. As PA_docen...
