Re: Fire Blight on Tremblett's Bitter?

My daughter and her husband moved into a house about 9 years ago, there is a lone apple tree planted ( in memorandum we believe) in the front yard, the tree seems healthy, no problems to speak of as far as we can see, but it has never set an apple. My question is, do apple trees have to have a 2nd ...

Re: Stanley Plums

It's been one of those years I suppose. I planted six apple trees in March and one of them grew about 2 foot, but the rest haven't done much. I seriously doubt my Orange Pippin gained any height. The side branches maybe a little, but not much. It was a crazy summer here in mid Michigan. No one has a...

Re: Sourcing Cider / Juice Year Round

My suggestion is to talk to your local orchard. Typically, if they press cider, they freeze some because it would go bad too quickly otherwise. At least that is how it is here in my neck of the woods. You might be right though...some of the "big boys" might not want to mess with such small...

Re: Cox's Orange Pippen

My Cox's Orange Pippin is finally to a size that I was wanting to post it. It was planted on March 18th of this year. My only concern is that I clipped the top too much and didn't trim the feathers as much as I should have. I figure I can do this during the winter instead of right now...when it isn'...

Re: Menomonie,WI in need of the following for chip bud graft

I did talk to him at Maple Valley and he mainly sells scions for bench grafting in spring. That was my impression anyway. I dont think he would have a problem if I drove to his place, I just dont want to drive 5 hours for chip buds. I was going to suggest you drive over there, but realized that Men...

Apple Crops In Other Places

The orchard owners i've talked to around my neck of the woods have had their entire crops wiped out this spring. It was so warm then got to freezing temperatures and killed off the blossoms.

Are other areas experiencing this as well?

Re: Organic Treatments

I'm going to try and grow organically. This year, I don't really plan on putting anything on them. I am more concerned with getting some peastone around the base and some ramial wood chips to cover the surrounding ground. I did get some humates and organic mulch to put around the tree when I planted...

I don't really have anything to add, but I just wanted to say "Hi!" to Peste, from one Michigander to another!

Re: Tremlett's Bitter

I was going to suggest a Wickson, but it's a midseason bloomer. There might be some overlap though but i'm not sure how effective that would be.

Re: Introduce Yourself

Hello! My name is Jeff. I'm from the Mid-Michigan area, close to Saginaw. I've been interested in apples for a few years, but only planted this year. I wanted to at my old house, but two 75-100ft maple trees in a city lot didn't allow me to do that. Now that i'm in a new place, I have the space. In ...

Re: What kind apple do you like to eat?

I simply LOVE apples! I recently tried Pink Lady and it tastes wonderful, probably the best apple I ever had. As for the others, I enjoy pretty much any of them, I particularly like Red Galas and Golden Delicious. I'd like to try Braeburn and Honeycrisp, but they are quite difficult to find here in...

Re: What kind apple do you like to eat?

As far as an apple I can walk into any store and pick up, it's Granny Smith, hands down. I'm always in pursuit of a large, firm, and tart apple. Especially one that I can get from a local orchard.

I tried a Golden Nugget last year and really enjoyed that one.
