Re: where can I buy a morello cherry tree in the USA?

Try Orange Pippin (their trees are better than some nurseries I have used) at http://www.orangepippintrees.com/cherry-trees, You can also order from Raintree Nursery or Willis Orchard online.

Re: Rootstock?

Most of mine are on M111 also. The nurseryman made the decision. There is more information located in Board index » Backyard and Garden Orchards » General: copy the following address and paste in your search bar:

Re: Cider press

I also am researching about a cider press. I have search and American Harvester seems to be a reliable company with a nice product. I plan on purchasing one within the next two years (my apple trees are still young).

Re: Rotting apple tree??

Trim out any suckers (branches growing straight up), then branches that grow towards the center of the tree. I cut back branches to a bud on the underside of the branch to provoke new growth on the outside of the tree and I have been successful with this so far; however, I would ask someone else on ...

Re: Cedar Rust Alert for Mid Atlantic States

Just remember to spray your trees and the ground around the tree. I heard cedar rust on the ground can reinfect the tree. One round of spraying seems to have stopped the cedar rust this summer but still on watch.

Re: Spraying

I am using the sticky red balls this year. I am happy to report my last remaining apple on Ananas Reinette is unscathed. Still 2-3 months to go before it is ripe so hoping for the best.

The balls are another story though, covered with bugs and aphids! Yippee

Re: New growth turning upwards????

I thought that with additional growth this season I could provoke the side branches to grow more parallel if I pruned them back to a bud on the under side of the branch. The new growth (only about 3 cm in length currently) would grow more parallel and not so upright. I guess I will have to "pro...

New growth turning upwards????

Why is it that on all my apple trees the most growth is upright. Should I straighten out branches as they grow or allow them to mature hoping they will become more parallel to the ground and prune in the autumn?

Re: Fire Blight on Tremblett's Bitter?

I cut a small branch and stripped the bark but no tale-tale red marks on the wood as Hugh noted. the wood is still green underneath so I hope it will recover. It was dry for several days and the weather changed from the mid 70s to 100 degrees Fahrenheit when the leaves turned black. During this time...

Re: Fire Blight on Tremblett's Bitter?

Hugh - do you think a 20 degree increase in heat could have caused the issue? I should have put in my first message that the leaves turned black and hung to the tree. I removed all the leaves and sprayed with a fungal spray hoping to save it. The new growth is only on one of the feathered branches. ...

Fire Blight on Tremblett's Bitter?

My Tremblett Bitter lost all of its leaves to what seems to be fire blight. :( Does anyone else seen fire blight on any apple tree? Can the apple tree survive an attack? My Tremblett Bitter seems to be putting out normal new leaf growth. Thanks!

Re: Best apple varieties for Maryland/Mid-Atlantic region?

Update to my earlier:

When planning on trees to purchase, avoid the following if you do not want to deal with cedar rust:
Golden Russet
Calville Blanc
Cox's Orange
Spitzenburg
Kingston Black
Siberian Crab

Cedar Rust Alert for Mid Atlantic States

I am reporting to mid Atlantic growers that Cedar Rust is prevalent. I noticed leaves on my Golden Russet with the tale-tale orange spots. Implementing my Bordeaux spray program today on all my trees ( Calville Blanc is also very susceptible to Cedar Rust but does not show any evidence of contractin...

Re: Calville Blanc

The Calville Blanc is growing well this year. It has momentarily stopped its vertical growth and starting to fill in nicely. The only thing I am doing is watching for suckers and pruning them right away. This winter is when I will be shaping the tree. I will post pictures when all the leaves fall. M...

Re: Need advice on starting hobby orchard, weekender, deer

I planted currants in and around my apples. I heard currants (especially black) deter deer and so far they had kept their distance! Made jam from the currants yesterday and yum.
