"Apples for a name" meaning?

Post by Jobiska »

Hi all!

I was searching some of my ancestors on newspapers dot com. Found a late 19th century account of a big farmers' fair type thing in Lancaster County PA where my great great grandfather and his brother (as well as many others) exhibited produce. Lots of variety names were listed for different produce, including apples, but the brother, and many other farmers, were mentioned as showing "apples for a name." I have not been successful in finding out what that means. My guess it is a variety that does not yet have a name? This is very difficult to search on Google because I only find other incidences of that usage, or blah stuff that just has apples and name and stuff in it.

Does anyone know what this means?

Thanks!
