I grew up with the understanding that the most reliable diagnostic for a Cox's Orange Pippin was that it rattled when shaken. I know that this was so until, at the most, thirty years ago but it is no longer true of those with a 'Cox's apples' label in the supermarkets. I am therefore led to doubt that they are Orange Pippins and this doubt is often supported by the fact that I do not recognise their appearance or their flavour/texture.
Can anyone throw any light on this situation?
'Cox apples' don't rattle.

Since there are no replies yet, I will change the question -
does anybody out there remember the rattle? or are you all too young?
