We have an old orchard of unknown as of yet apples. I am thinking most trees are 30 to 50 years old. They do seem to be producing here in southern New Hampsire in that the fruit is now the size of a apricot or so. I would think the 100 plus trees need trimming. The folks that lived here seem to have done little in the way of upkeep. I/we are very very new to having trees bearing apples of any kind. I guess I am asking for any insight into the care and up keep of the trees.
Thanks all.
Best,
DT

Re: Old orchard needs help
First thing I would do is cut out the suckers. Then take a look at how far the branches are spaced on the main trunk. I try to space mine out about 12-18 inches apart on the main trunk. At each node I have two or three branches. This allows air and sunlight into the canopy. There is plenty of information on the internet on how to trim apple trees. I don't envy your task. I have 24 trees and they keep me busy.
