Hi there,

My wife and I recently bought a new home in northern California and discovered that the previous owner (an avid gardener) had a few hidden apple trees on the lot. I say hidden because they're small (maybe 4 feet high) and look more like shrubs than trees. I picked one of the apples today, it's fairly large, with a yellow tint (though it's still not ripe). When I cut it open, I found that the flesh is very firm (but also kind of springy) and very sour. Oddly, it also had a ton of seeds (like probably 30 per apple), and the seed area is much larger than a normal apple. Ideas?? Edible??

That's not an apple. Might be quince -- I don't know a lot about quince except that they are very hard and dry, large, and more closely related to pears than to apples. Look into it.

Wow - what a surprise! I've heard of quince but had no idea that's what a raw one looked like. Thanks so much!
